240 engine seals[850/1995] posted by Lujo Bauer on

The local Volvo dealership told me that my '88 240DL needs to have the rear main seal and the front engine seals replaced. They quoted me a pretty high price for these repairs. What would be a fair price for fixing this? Or is it something I may be able to do myself? Could anyone recommend a good mechanic near Princeton, NJ?

Thanks for your help.

Front engine seals are done in conjunction with timing belt replacement. Likely 2 to 2.5 hours labor plus parts (timing belt, three seals, and possibly an idler pulley/bearing). Parts $75-150, labor ~$130-150. To replace the rear main seal, you must remove the transmission - seal is pretty cheap, removing the tranny is not - probably 4 hours labor or more to remove and install.

However, before you go ahead and replace these, make usre that your flame trap in the crankcase ventillation system and the associated hoses are clean and clear. If there is restriciton in this system, crankcase pressure will force oil through all the seals! SOmetimes simply taking care of this inexpensive maintenance item stops problems with seal leakage!

I have had the front seals done, it cost about what Steve said, the rear I was quoted $140 labour + $20 for the seal. The front is not too hard, follow the manual. The rear is more involved, as you have to R&R the clutch, and cope with a 115lb gearbox. Roger the flame trap.
