240 A/C (chrysler) belt tightening.[850/1995] posted by Jess K. on

Saw something previously on this but couldnt find it in the archives.
I need to tighten my AC belts, (driving to FL) :0).
I understand this is done by moving the shims around?
How may I hold the AC pulley still to remove bolt?
I didn't really see a good place to insert a screwdriver or wedge.
If shims are not present, can I get from volvo?
What is a good suction side reading on the compressor?
Thanks in advance. Jess

You do not meed to hold the A/C pulley. the shims are on the crank pulley, and all you need are already installed (or should be!) The pulley is held together with 4 small bolts and two nuts on studs. Do not try to remove the large center bolt (unless you are replacing a timing belt). Unfasten the 4 bolts and two nuts and take one or more shims from between the pulleys and place on the outside of the pulleys and bolt back together to tighten belt. Do not make too tight! You will need to rotate crank and tighten the pulley in stages. If you get it too tight, you can cause the outer half of the pulley to fail at the bolt circle, so be judicious with the shims.

The shim is in between the halves of the crankshaft pulley. There are 6 fasteners (10mm hex as I recall) that hold the halves together. It should be relatively easy to remove these with light impact. Changing the thickness of the shim changes the spacing between the two pulley halves. Since these are for a V belt, the effective diameter of the pulley changes, therefore changing the belt tightness. I do not know the relationship of shim thickness to belt length, though it could be calculated. I assume shims are available from Volvo, but it may be easier and less expensive to get a different size belt. I assume the "standard" belt, when new, should fit your car, if the original shims and compressor mountings are still in place. I just replaced my compressor and belt, and upon tightening everything up, it just fit correctly.
