245 Tailgate Latch[850/1995] posted by Tracy Hall on

Greetings,

I haven't bought a manual yet for my new (old) '84 245. My latch on the tailgate doesn't work, I can open it from the inside and it closes OK. I assume I just need a new button for it. Does anyone have any advice/experience with this and can offer suggestions?

Thanks

Tracy

Tracy,

I have owned two 240DLs both of which have had the tailgate latch problem. You are probably right about the button. The button has two flanges with holes in them that a small rod slips through. In both cases one of the flanges had broken and the rod had sliped out. Fortunately the tailgate still opens from the inside when this happens. The only tools I remember needing were screw drivers and needle nose pliers. The process to replace the button is quite simple and you can probably figure it out on your own but I would suggest your purchase the Haynes manual.

The button breaks where the pin passes through it. A new button will fix it. Expect to pay big bucks. The whole outside handle may be easier to find. I got one at a junk yard for about 25$. It was used but in good shape.
I remember that the hatch mechanism was complicated and the Haynes manual had a good picture of it.

If the latch is the same as the one on the 76 245, the lock works by disengaging a rod about 1.5" long from the door latch mechanism (only does this for the outside button), the mechanism that does this can become bent and the rod will not engage the latch. I had this problem, quite simple, if a little fiddly to fix, just expose the latch mechanism (see maunal) and check if this is the problem. I think I just bent the mechanism back into place with a pair of pliers.

Hope this helps
