240 GL Tierod (Stumper of a Problem)[850/1995] posted by Ian Banks on

On my '87 240 GL, 4 door, B230F 4-banger, there is about a 1/4" play on the driver's side tire (toe in and out). The tierod end is firmly on there and I traced it back to where the iterod itself ( the ball is moving in the socket with that 1/4" play. I am going to get it professionally taken care of but the shop is going charge me an extra $100 to figure out what type of tierod is on my car. Apparently there is two different types but don't know which one is installed on the vechile (thanks NAPA). So my question to all you gurus of Volvo wisdom out there. I need to know what type of tierod is installed on my particular type of volvo. I appreciate all input.

Aloha,

Ian

I've got an 84' 240 DL, I had the same problem. If I'm not mistaken, there are two kinds, one with a donut on one end, where the rubber boot attaches to. The other one doesn't have this donut. Lookk under the car for the donut on the tie rod, this should give you the right tie-rod. You might want to check the lower ball joint on that side for some play. That needed to be replaced along with the tie -rod in my car. Get the parts from advanced auto parts or auto-zone, they are the cheapest, it is something you could do yourself.

Thanks for the input Ozzie. I just finished replacing the tierod ends, and that was completly snug and the only play was in the tierod itself. Armed with this knowledge I think I will make a stop to my local auto parts store this weekend. Thanks again.

As Ozzie noted, check for whether the boot fastens around a rubber donut or directly to the tierod.

Normally when the tie rod inner joint goes bad, it is because the boots have failed and allowed water and dirt into the joint. Of one is bad, there is good chance that the other is also bad and that both boots need replacing. If this is the case, there is probably also wear or damage to the rack itself and the seals. Even if the rack is OK, it is likely cheaper to replace the entire rack with a rebuilt unit (~$250) which comes complete with tie rods and boots.

Ian,
I know there are a limited number of independent garages and no Volvo dealer on Maui, but $100 to simply determine which type tierod your car car is outrageous. Perhaps it's time to scope out other repair shop options.

My sentiments exactly. That is rediculous(sp). Go somewhere else.

Heck, labor to change the part shouldn't be that much.

Thanks for the input and for that pricing you can tell that's why I started searching the web to find parts and such.

Thanks Again,

Ian Banks
