Overdrive question[850/1995] posted by Matt B on

I have a 1984 240 Diesel with the electronic overdrive. I would like to know if it is normal for the overdrive to only click in once the engine is warm. I have to wait until the engine temp gauge is at the halfway point until I can click it in. Sometimes it will click in , and then right back out again. I have to keep trying until it stays in. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

That can be a symptom of the 4th gear switch going bad (it is closed to ground in 4th so the OD relay will only allow OD when gearbox is in 4th). This switch is on top of gearbox pointed to the right (the other one is for reverse lights on other side of box). If you remove wire and jumper it to ground and it works any time hot or cold then that's it. Better yet, most of the time when it's the switch, you can get it to engage by holding back on gear lever when it's in 4th and then pushing down OD button.

Is this an automatic? If yes, it sounds like the OD relay is intermittent (could also be the trans mounted solenoid). The relay is orange, mounted behind the dash above the switches, reached by removing the glove box. If a manual trans, could be the relay, solenoid, or OD itself. Low fluid could even cause this.
