M46 noises[850/1995] posted by Marten Douma on

Hello,
For a couple of years, my '83 245 with M46 has been making a mild grinding (almost like radio static)
noise when in neutral, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. The noise disappears when the clutch is depressed, or when in 4th and OD.
My feeling is that this may be one of the roller bearings at the end of the countershaft (layshaft in Haynes) of the transmission.
When I asked my regular guy about it he couldn't say what it might be, and said if it were his option he
would wait for a failure and put in a used transmission. This is okay but he is single and doesn't have
kids who would prefer not to walk the rest of the way to the cottage.
Question 1: does anyone have suggestions about what this could be.
Question 2: can I drop the clutch, transmission and OD units and replace the countershaft roller
bearings without tearing out the guts and gears of the transmission. Haynes implies this is do-able, and
appears to show that the bearings are retained in the case by the clutch housing in front and the OD
case in back.
I would appreciate your input.

Your diagnosis of countershaft bergs is sound but it requires a special puller to get bearings off shaft w/o complete teardown. The tapered brgs are on shaft facing out and the races are pushed into the case and retained by end cover and bell housing. The puller is something a dealer will have and maybe a good independent.

I found myself faced with the same problem. But what it came down to was simple. First of it had the wrong tranny oil, the second thing was that the foam boot that fits between the body and the tranzmission had broke and feel out. After I replaced it the car was Quiet again. Hope thats all it is with yours too. hope I helped

I have a 1976 245 with a 1982 M46 transmission. It has been a little noisy since I installed the trans. It does not have any kind of foam rubber boot. Is there supposed to be one between the transmission tunnel and the top of the transmission or what? I have considered filling the rubber shift lever boot with fiberglass or other insulation.

Hi,
Just a quick followup. This weekend I drained and replaced the ATF type F, and cleaned a small amount of metal swarf from the magnet on the drain plug. I removed the OD cover plate and drained it as well. I couldn't get the round cover plate off the OD fine filter, though. Transmission still noisy as in the original post. Oh well.

My car does the same thing (in neutral, at least), dealer says it's just the clutch spinning
