Original Radios in 240's. What's the Deal?[850/1995] posted by Tariq Hamid on

I just picked up a 92 240 and, as I suspected, the radio is possesed. I get Crackleing, The sound goes from the left speaker to the right sporadically and sometimes it just does not work at all and sometimes it works fine with no problem! I knew an 89 240 that did this exact same thing. The question is, is this problem solely due to a crappy radio or is there other demons at work here that would prevent a replacement aftermarket unit from working correctly?

There seems like no of getting around it the radio Volvo installs at the factory is poor at best and generally crap at five years old. After much debate I replaced my unit with an Alpine CD reciever & new 2 ways front & rear. Finally real sound: clear & more than enough power for me (4x35 watts).
Last month or so long threads on speakers & such good advice. Good luck.

Most of the OEM Volvo radios have a lifetime of 5-8 years before the tape drives or the main circuit board fails, or anyone of the gazillion components on the main board, and the easiest fix is an aftermarket radio. No big deal...

For the cost of a Volvo OEM replacement (read REBUILT P.O.S.) you can get a decent AM/FM/Tape or CD head unit and 4 good speakers and in an afternoon do the swap.

I was able to replace my CR-712 OEM head unit for $85 with a Kenwood KRC740 purchased from a guy on rec.audio.car-nice unit, rempoveable faceplate, CD/MD controlled for when I decide to buy a new toy for the trunk.

It could be worse, try replacing a DELCO big chassis or Ford Oval face radio or one of the Pontiac jobs with all the controls in the steering wheel! And you don't have to have a degree in Auto Disassembly to do the work yourself!
