How can I tell if the clutch in my 83 240 needs replaced? I've got 221k on it and as far as I know, the original clutch. It seems to be loosing pep although the engine is runnin' ok.

Thanks

Tom

When you drop the clutch and go, does it git goin' or does it wind down and move along with no noticable "grab"? Got a tach? If you put it in a higher gear and try to go it should stall (w/out feathering the clutch).

Find a big empty parking lot, put the emergency brake on, rev it up a little and try to drive away. If the car doesn't stall immediately, you've got some clutch slippage. Car Talk boys said to put the car up against something for this, ubt it depends on whether you like doing bodywork or brake work should you have a great clutch and lots of torque. Use the emergency brake method and not to many rpms.

With the transmission in 1st gear, where does the clutch start to release ?
If it's close to the very top of the peddal it may be adjustable.
Adjust it so that it starts to "grab" slightly above the middle of the peddal's path
yet approx. 1.24" below the top.
This assuming the clutch is slipping.
Another common problem is hard shifting which can be caused by worn out
clutch components or bad adjustment. I.e. if the clutch starts to "grab" very
low, close to the floor. Again, this can be some times adjustable.
Considering high number of miles on your car, I would guess the clutch
itself may need replacing.
Good luck.

While driving at about 40 mph or so with the transmission in 4th gear, push the clutch in and rev the motor up. Now release the clutch as fast as you can. If your clutch is working properly, it should drag the rpms down almost instantly. If it doesn't, it is slipping.
