I haven`t had personal experience with diesel volvo`s but a couple of my friends owned `84 diesels and they seemed to have lots of problems with their cars.As i recall, head gaskets seem to be a weak area and of course, if you need a motor rebuild it`s going to be major $. I`m sure you`ll get responses from the experts. Richard.

Man, you got me WRONG !! I like Diesels for ANY convertion. They're perfect for V2, V4, V6, V8, V12, V16, after market turbos, race & rally cars and what ever. And no CA smog testing. Ever !
When Volvo put out such a shit as Volvo/VW diesels I feel personally offended. To me Volvo has been symbol of quality since I got interested in cars. My first Volvo was a "Faforit", B16 3-spd 544, sold to military and poor people, even the paint was like under coating, not shiny and all chrome was missing. I liked that car a lot! I'd buy THAT rather than FWD crap...Or bastard diesels with belts on the wrong end. They call this diesel "Hitler's Last Revence" in Germany.

First time volvo buyer or first time diesel buyer.
Check out the link for questions and answers.
If in good running condition with good maintenance records.
The engine to rebuild is expensive, the injector pump is expensive.
The purchase price is usually the major decision maker.

A Volvo Diesel is not nearly as reliable as a MB Diesel.

I would suggest another vehicle.

DB:
Most of the responses so far to your question didn't seem to be too helpful, just an opportunity to rag on Volvo diesels.

So, let me jump in. I have an '84 Diesel w/160K miles. It has been no more trouble than any gas car I ever owned, including 3 Volvos. BUT, I am the original owner and I am religious about changing oil and completing scheduled maintenance (emphasis on timing belts and valve adjustments). And let me add that my fuel mileage is still about 30mpg around town and 35mpg on a trip, with or without the A/C. That's litte change from when the car was new.

In your case, you may not know how well the previous owner cared for the car, so it becomes a bit of gamble. If he has maintenance reords, you might get a better feeling about it. If you have your heart set on the car, take it to a trusted diesel mechanic for a diagnostic. A compression check will give you a quick snapshot of engine health. Also, check for rust ALL OVER, especially seat pans. Difficult starting can frequently be attributed to dead glow plugs or failure to drain the water from the fuel filter. Oh, yeah, if the dashboard has cracks, ignore it. Rare is the Volvo without them.

Another consideration. If the terrain is hilly or even mountainous where you live, run from this car. As much as I love mine, a hill climber she ain't.

Good Luck,
