Automatic transmission question[850/1995] posted by Rick on

I live in North Carolina where yearly exhaust emission test is required.
I own 1986 740T with AW D,2,1 Automatic transmission.
All of the inspection stations are refusing to perform emissions test on
my car due to some kind of bulletin implying transmission could be
severely damaged when engine is running in park or neutral.
They are all sending me back to the dealer saying they must do something
first in order to perform this test. I could be wrong, but it looks like they
would have to jack up the car or disconnect the drive shaft.
I've seen the dealer's mechanic perform emissions test, and they NEVER
do anything out of ordinary. What's going on here ?
Dealer tells me only ZF type transmissions are affected. Inspection stations
are refusing to touch any AT with overdrive regardless of whether it's
AW or ZF.
Yes, I know. I should just go to the dealer to have this done. However,
it's 50 miles away each way. Plus, they don't make money doing emissions
testing. They'll try their best to find something that "desperately" needs fixi'n
NOW, and can't wait. No, I don't like going to them …

Thae bulletin only pertains to nonturbo models with ZF transmission. Yours is safe. I don't know how you are going to get that across to them.

I have a ZF that failed at 28,000 miles and was replaced. Since then it is OK. For inspections I still go to Volvo just for safety. If it does fail I have the data to back up your claim that it is a defective transmission. You should be able to get a major adustment on the repair if it happens.

Thanks a lot Abe and Don for clearing this up for me.

The reason the NC Inspection boys/girls are skittish is that back in early 90's when they first had to to the new emissions tests they totalled some BMW and MB trans units by reving the engine up to 3500rpm in park! I remember there was a TV station in Winson/Salem that sent a crew out to the local inspection station just as they blew up a guys BMW and the tape is better than "COPS" "RealTV" or the like! If the dude had a gun, a Glock would be appropriate for a BMW owner, he would have gone Postal. The State had to buy lots of new trannys and they established this ANAL policy to protect their Bubba's/Bubbette's. Get the dealer to put it in writing on their letterhead and ask to see the supervisor at the inspection station, then if they balk, call Raleigh or WRAL and such.

Where in NC do you live? I live in Gastonia and know several places other than dealers who will do the inspection.
