Tracy,

Yesterday I had written you a whole list of things to watch out for when replacing your turbocharger, when I tried to post, the Brickboard kept saying "duplicate submission" and would not let me post.

Anyway since your turbo is not bad, why worry about replacing it. It will give plenty of warning when it starts to go. When I bought my 83 three years ago it had 113k on the turbo, I knew that the turbo was basically shot then, but the car has an excellent body, is a two door, and was cheap, so I bought it anyway. It had been leaking, noisy and losing power for about a year, when it really bit the dust at 134k on 2/12/98 on the way to work by making an awful groaning noise under boost. On the way home it was putting out so much smoke, it looked as if I was spraying for mosquitos.

I had it rebuilt and installed it with new gaskets, exhaust fasteners, new oil supply line, and hoses( blue ones) and so far so good. If you not very mechanical, I would not recommend tackling the job. I would rather replace 5 water pumps to one turbocharger any day. Exhaust studs can twist off and following the torque specifiations are a must especally with the four bolts that bolt the turbo to the exhaust manifold. Get a Bentley service manual and study it before you perform the job.
