What is difference between 850/854/855 Models??[850/1995] posted by Chris Sullivan on

Just bought a 96 850 Turbo. A great car. Took it to the dealer for inspection and they called it an 854 model. I was just wondering if anyone knew what the differences are between the 850/ 854/ 855 groups. Does it have anything to do with performance of the vehicle?? Thanks and keep up this great web site.

Um, I'm a 2xx guy, but...
If we follow 1xx, 2xx, and 7xx conventions, 850 is the generic name on the trunk
854/855 would be Volvo internal code indicating the following:
1st digit=series (1,2,7,9,8) (3 and 4 series in Europe)
2nd digit=cylinders (4,6,5)
3rd digit=doors (2=coupe, 4=sedan, 5=wagon)
So, a '75 6 cyl. coupe would be a 262
my '83 sedan is a 244
an '850' sedan would be an 854
an '850' wagon would be an 855
Note: the cylinder count had a tendency to get screwy in 7xx and 9xx models, so don't flame me. There were 4 cylinder 760's and maybe some 6 cylinder 940's...
And I have *NO* idea what a V90 or S70 indicates - my guess is that they just ran out of series numbers!

800 is the series. 854 and 854 tells you wich version, i.e. if sedan or waggon, in reality 4 or 5 doors, 852 would then be a 2 doors coupé version.
The middle digit was once to say how many cylinders, but that's not correct any more. There is a four cylinder version of the 850, as well as there was a four cylinder version of the 760. Don't you remember the Volvo 122 and 123 models, also called "Amazon" in Europe? They didn't have a two cylinder engine as far as I know. I think you can say that the higher the middle digit, the higher standard of the series, like the basic 940 and the luxury version 960.
As to the new S/V70 etc., I think you're right. The first one with this kind of signification, the S40, was supposed to be named S4, but then Audi protested. Then, it was altered to S40. The waggon was supposed to be called F40, but then Ferrari protested, so they named it V40 instead. There are so many various names of car models now, and everyone is guarding their own, so I think Volvo more or less just had to pick something out of thin air that was not already occupied by someone else.
When the 850 was presented, BMW protested against it, as they have a very luxurious sport version called BMW 850. Volvo was forbidden to use "850" whithout "Volvo" before the number in any advertising, i.e. "Volvo 850" was OK, only "850" was not!

Good responses guys, As far as the 850s go.
I just wanted to clarify the new nomenclature for the 1998's and beyond.
V = versatility (or 5 door wagon)
S = sedan (or ... sedan)
C = coupe (or 2 door coupe)
Beyond this, there are two basic types of car volvo sells:
The 70 - 5 cyclinder, front wheel drive, available as S70, V70, or C70.
The 90 - 6 cylinder, rear wheel drive, available as an S90, or V90.

Forget the S/V90! The last RWD Volvo was built at the Gothenburg Factory February 5th, 1998! (A white 940.) We are now waiting for the P23 and the S100. Internal introduction for agents all over the world will take place in Gothenburg this summer during June, July and August.

Perhaps, someday. But the question, and other answers on this thread were dealing with current offerings by volvo. And the 1998 6 cylinder, rwd models
you see right now on the volvo dealers lots are, in fact, S90's and V90's. They may or may not be discontinued, but they are on the road now as you read this.
However, since you bring up the future offerings by volvo, maybe you could enlighten us on what the new prefixes mean.
Thanks in advance for your insight!

I know for a fact it is not offerred in the state of California. Pardon me if I left out some of the other markets. I just went through the process of reviewing volvos 98 lineup, because I was buying one (a V70). The other sources of information I used to look into this were the Volvo of North America page and Edmunds Automobile Review. The respective links are below.

http://www.edmunds.com/edweb/cars/Volvo.html
I could have easily overlooked models offered in other countries (oops!), and I apologize for being so USA-centered in my perspective. (It's something I'm working on diligently, the first step was buying a swedish car.)
I only took exception to the suggestion to "forget" one of the '98 models which I saw sitting on the dealership floor yesterday (when I picked up an oil filter).
What links will give me a look at the S40?
Cheers!

Chris,
Although Volvo has changed its nomenclature over the years, owners and dealers alike have been using the following age-old system to identify their Volvos:
First number: model or series (1 thru 9?)
Second number: number of cylinders (4,5,6) (sometimes refers to trim level, like "780")
Third number: number of doors (2,4, or 5)
Performance or trim is usually determined more by a suffix of some kind (e.g. "DL, GL, GLE, GLT, SE, Turbo," etc.)
So the dealer's referring to your car as a 850 4-door sedan (854).
Enjoy your new brick!
Regards,
Eric

Fantasizing about a "new" 250-series[850/1995] posted by LKB on

Fantasy:
"Volvo announces upgrade to old 200-series, will have 5-cylinder engine, will be offered in 254 and 255 model designations, will have real-wheel-drive, will have notched trunk for easy loading, will have fold-down rear seats, will have round blue-HID headlights, will have all seats heated, will have electronic memory front seats, turbo version may become available, if demand warrants. Will be price in low $20,000's."
"People camping in huge lines at Volvo dealerships, just like rock concerts!"
(rubber-room time for me!) :-)
