Wiring Short in '91 240[240-260/91] posted by David Mei on

Here's one for all you detectives. It's got me AND my mechanic stumped:
I have a short in my 1991 240 wagon. It's in the steering column somewhere. When a make a hard turn, like on an on-ramp, or if I pull slightly on the steering wheel at around the 2 o'clock position, the radio and intertior fan cut out. They come right back on when I let go or come out of the turn. My local mechanic has snooped around a bit, but is hesitant about taking the whole thing apart without having any idea what to look for.

Any ideas?

Pull back the console/center lower dash, the panel where the switches are located and heater fan controls are located. You will see a stack of ground wires on a screw at the upper left. The stress of steering shaft is moving the dash cross brace and loosening the ground wires under the loose screw. Do this soon before some electronic component gets really P.O.ed and quits on you.
