Hot air line to air cleaner box... why?[240-260/1984] posted by Tom Salzmann on

I've read all the problems associated with a bad thermostat for the 'door' which allows the hot air into the cleaner. Why even bother with this if one lives in a mild climate? How low do temps need to be for the hot air to be a necessity? I'd like to simply disconnect mine and point the thing toward the wheel well or something. Why gamble? Is there any detriment to disconnecting the metal tube and pointing it away from the hot air box on the manifold? Silly question?

The hot air tube (TAC in emission speak) does a couple of things. First it helps lower emissions of Hydrocarbons during cold start and warm up. Secondly it
helps give a smother idle during the cold start and warm up.
The down side of disconnecting it other than the obvious increased pollution, and rougher idle, would be failing any type of visual inspection during a smog test. In Southern California this is a guarrenteed fail unless the technician is brain dead.
