Results on street cam project on B20F[23/73] posted by Mark Fleming on

Finally got my ipd cam in and have driven a few miles. Strange, the most noticable difference is the lack of low end torque. When the AC comes on, it will stall if the engine is not warmed yet. I've bumped up the idle, but the AC can drop it from 1200 to 700. The AC solenoid that allows additional air to bypass the throttle on the D-Jet is shot, so this makes the problem much worse. Even still, compared to the old problem it's obvious that there is a loss of torque. Used to set rpm at 1,000 and would drop it to 800, so there's quite a difference.

Top end feels lively. Not a powerhouse, but adds some zip. Still have stock air filter and exhaust, so may need to upgrade a little to get full benefit of the cam. Used to huff and puff above 5K. Now it wants to go above 6K everytime. Whoa down! Must have something to do with the accelerator? (Or as my wife's grandpa calls it, the "exhilarator").

Kept the old valve springs, even though the double springs were included in the kit. Majority opinion was the double wound were not for street use and main effect would be increased wear on the cam. So instead of having the spring seats milled for the new springs, I had bronze valve guides and hardened seats put in. That way, I still got to spend my wad.

Had .040 milled of the head to make my "B20 E-minus." Hard to say what the compression ratio is exactly. Probably around 9.4. Since I put in the cam at the same time, can't say which had the most effect.

Mark,

You might want to try advancing your cam. Advancing a cam will improve bottom-end performance at the expense of the top end. If your driving style is such that having good low-end performance is more important to you than close-to-redline performance, this is something you might want to consider. I dunno if anybody makes an adjustable cam gear for a B20, but if they do, you might want to think about replacing your stock cam gear with one.

You've completed step # 41 on how to piss money away for poor performance. --
