Dashboard warning lights all on[740-760/90] posted by Mark D Spiteri on

VOLVO 740 Turbo SW AUTO

I was driving on the freeway when suddenly all the dash warning lights came on (well almost all of them, except the SRS I think), that's including parking brake, battery, engine, service, etc.

The car felt fine, was running smoothly, and changing as normal. I got to my destination and am now wondering about it.

Any ideas?

Mark

Yep, classic failed alternator...BUT you could luck out and it's just a broken alternator ground wire (from the battery to the engine, look for a blue wire) or the red hot wire from the battery + to the alternator is broken, or a bad voltage regulator/bad brushes.

You could also have a broken fan belt assuming you have more than one fan belt driving your water pump (or you would know REAL quick it was a broken fan belt!)

Check for broken/unattached wires (most likely).
Put VOM on battery with engine running....should have about 13.2v.

Take out voltage regulator and check for worn brushes (generally above 150k mi).
