Emission Control[240-260/1989] posted by D L Norman on

My 89 240DL has been through emission control twice in the past three weeks and failed. My machanic says every part that would cause the car to fail has been changed. It is failing the OXIDES OF NITROGEN at 4.9gpm, should be 3.0gpm. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for the input.

Diana,

We have had several older Volvo's fail emissions because of nitric oxides. First let me try to explain why. Nitric oxides are a product of combustion temperature.
The higher the temp the higher the oxides. This can be caused by alot of things.
An engine that is running hot, was there a fan in front of the car during the test?
Another thing that can increase oxides is the build up of carbon on the top of the piston. Did he run some combustion chamber cleaner through the engine? Did he check engine timing ? A mistimed engine can also have high combustion temps. If all else fails and he has done repairs according to your states laws, he should be able to issue a waiver.
