Front end creaking[940-960/1993] posted by Alan Carlo on

The front suspension of my 1993 945 with 78K is intermittantly making a creaking noise. I managed to isolate it to the outer tie rod ends. If I hold the tie rod end while bouncing the car I can feel the vibration. When I try to rotate the steering rod it is extremely difficult to rotate. All suspension components are original. I tried this rotation on my 1992 944 with 38K and it moves fairly easily. Is this symtematic of a failing outer tie rod end? Should the movement be fairly easy? There is no noticable play in the rack or tie rod ends.
Thanks for any input.

It would be much more likely that the creak is from the inner tie rod ball socket. It can sometimes be successfully lubed by removing the tie rod end from spindle and then removing boot at steering rack end and sliding it down the tie rod to get at the inner socket to put grease on it and the work it around and then apply more grease and repeat. This might only take care of it for 30K miles or it might be okay for a longer time.
