Mods and A/C Questions[740-760/89] posted by Michael Stabile on

I have an 89 760 turbo wagon that I would like to update the look of by replacing the chrome trim with all black trim and any other mods that might ba available - Anyone donethis and is there a source other than Volvo? Also, the panel vents do not work - seems the control box doesn't work in that position - It's getting awfully hot trying to cool the car through the defrost and floor vents. Help!!! --

I'm not into body and paint but I would think that a paint shop would be able to prep and paint your mouldings black.
As for the a/c trouble: there are 4 areas where the source vacuum can be shut down and make your vents not change over.
1. the hose into car near accel pedal under hood has no vacuum on it due to being disconnected or damaged
2. inside the car under dash that same hose can be crushed up above and to the right of accel. pedal. Repair it with a piece of the rigid little spray tube that comes on aerosol cans like WD-40
3. behind the control head there is another place where there is a "y" fitting in the source vacuum hose that can collapse. Repair as in #2
4. The floor/defrost diaphragm is leaking. This is on the driver's side end of heater case above and to the right of accel pedal and it is the yellow hose. Plug it up with something and see if it returns to working, if so then leave it plugged as the cost of repair is high and the compromise in function is minor unless you live in a really cold place (floor air volume will be lower).
these were listed in the order that I suggest to check but Murphy's laws will likely make the solution be at the opposite end of list from which you choose to attack.
