The T5 and the T5-R and the R engines are essentially the same. The only difference is the engine management system control - i.e., the 'chip' which keeps all the 'maps' that the ECU uses to control fuel, boost, shifts, ignition and such.
The IPD chip (together with the modified exhaust system) produces the same horsepower output regardless of which high pressure turbo engine you start with because you remove the chip that was there. The 275 hp limit was 'chosen' as this is the practical limit of hp that you can couple to the pavement with good tires and front wheel drive. However, it is easily possible to go higher without loss of around town drivability. Martin Motorsports has a chip that generates ~335 hp with the same engine and the sport exhaust. He uses a K&N filter, but I don't know that this is essential to the chip performance. You cannot effectively use all of this hp from a stop as you simply get excessive wheel spin and hit the rev limiter (which is also moved up a bit). However, the power is useful at speed for acceleration - it is quite effective in corners and straits at Summit Point when passing M3s and AMG M-B at most any point on the track.
