A/C Hint for 93 and later[740-760/89] posted by abe crombie on

The 93 and later models that have R134a as original refrigerant have an overtemp switch that will interrupt power at the compressor clutch when compressor gets too warm.
Two things can cause it to get too warm: 1. low refrigerant, when the level is low the cooling effects of the unboiled refrigerant going back to compressor is not present and it gets hot enough after running for a few minutes to shut down for 5-10 minutes.
2. The outside temp is high (over 100 F) and it gets too hot even when refrigerant is okay. This can be avoided by using the recirculate function manual selection when it is that hot to lower the incoming air temp to evap and thus lower the return refrigerant temp preventing the shutdown. This should only be done when it is really hot as constant use of recirc is going to make you have a much increased likelihood of getting the stinky a/c odor problem.
