excessive sway on 82'240 turbo[ALL/1988] posted by Craig on

My 240 recently and suddenly started swaying excessively when turning or swerving-especially noticeable at highway speeds. Steering also became very loose with a few inches of play in the wheel before the tires respond. Today,I replaced the steering rack as it was leaking and I thought this could be contributing to the loose steering feel. I also recently replaced the sway bar bushings with polyurethane's and the center sway bar bushings as well. The steering is tighter now, but the sway remains. Lower ball joints seem to be fine. Does anyone have any other ideas of what to check, or what this could be caused by? Thank's -Craig

Front struts replaced a year ago. Sway is in the front, and turning response is slow. Popping noise that has been going on when I turn sharp for the past 2 years is now gone, so it must have been the inner tie rod ends. Also, alignment is now off since I installed the new rack- could that be causing a sloppy feel in the steering? (tow is probably angled too far out.) -Craig

Craig,
Do the simple things first.
Align the front end, and balance the tires.

OK; I had the car aligned, and the steering is straight and seems to be tight. The car still sways like the bar is not even there. The new Poly bushings in the front sway bar are intact and look fine, as well as the lower end-link bushings. the hood now dips 3 or 4 inches lower than it used to on turns and the back of the car acts like it is sliding out a few inches on ice at the same time. I have new rear shocks, front struts, steering rack, lower ball joints are good. What else is there? The car has a dangerous ride now. Thank's, -Craig
