Cold Start Condition solution
I had this problem and since I had twin 740s I swapped everything and found that I could not swap symptoms. It would stall when put in gear during the summer months but not the winter. A curious fact that if I started the car and immediately killed it, the problem would go away. My 740 wagon worked ok and my wife's 740 sedan had the problem. Later I found that my wagon had the modification mentioned below. it was not until her MFI controller failed and was replaced that the problem went away. Read on.
This is from Volvo Techincal Service bulletin.
CONDITION
The engine starts normally at approximately 68 F but may stall immediately ater starting if it is subject to load (transmission in drive, A/C compressor and/or power steering pump on).
If all proper vehicle maintenance has been performed, and this condition still occurs, then a service kit (p/n 3531106-7) can be installed to alleviate this condition. This kit increases the engine coolant temperature sensor negative temperature coefficient voltage by 0.5 V at 59F if the engine temperature is between 41-86F when it is started. This causes the LH MFI control module to sense coolant temperature to be approximately 18F lower than it actually is, resulting in an increased choke factor.
The voltage is not increased until the oil pressure has risen to the point where the oil pressure sensor breaks the ground connection. If the engine temperature is under 41F when it is started and enters the range 41-86F within 1 minute after start, the increased choke factor will be in effect for the remainder of that minute.
It also says to "Check the last three digits of the Bosch part number on the control mudule. If the vehicle has a 554 or 591 control mudule, do not install the service kit as these already incomporate the revised programming of the kit.
