1989 740 GL - bottomed out[ALL/1988] posted by allan on

Last night, with 3 people in the rear seat, by car bottomed out going up and down a ramp thing for an underground parking garage. I also have lots of car audio gear in the back, so I figure the combined weight did it in. Now I'm not totally sure what I should be examining for replacement to prevent this from happening again. I figure it's the springs - need to get springs with a higher force constant on them. If this is right, no need to reply. If I need to replace something else, too, or at least think about replacing something else, let me know.
thanks,
allan chen

I would think that you would only be concerned if you heard the tires rubbing against the car. If it was the body scraping the pavement, then it was probably a simple overloading problem. The typical ride hieght is controlled by the springs, with dips and bumps being taken up by the shocks. Again, if it was the muffler or some other body part scraping against the ground I would do what we do with out 940SE, approach the incline slowly, sometimes even stopping before we go up a driveway. If it was the tires rubbing, or suspension rubbing against the car then it may be time for new shocks.

Now that I think about it, there might have been some definite rubbing of the tires. It was a pretty loud sound, mostly the sound of the bottom of the car hitting the road, but I think I head a kind of rubbing noise, too. I'm going to be replacing the shocks anyway (Bilsteins). I just wanted to know if you guys though I should replace the springs, too.
