mods on a 740...[ALL/1988] posted by allan on

I have been reading the thread on performance mods, specifically exhaust, for the 850 series cars. Do you guys know of any similar mods for a 740? (1989 740 GL, non turbo) particularly the exhuast. I already have the K&N in there, going to work on the suspension during spring break, but I have no clue what to do for the exhaust. Not nec. something super high-performance, just something better than stock..
thanks,

I'd like to read what is suggested for Allen's car and ask what might be recommended for my '89 745 turbo.....? (b230ft)

Go to (www.geocities.com/MotorCity/4242). It is the Turbobricks website.
It specializes in performance mods for 2/7/9 series Volvos. Lots of good advice!
I can also be of personal help to you, as I have modified my 1990 744 quite a bit.

Oh, I forgot!
I recommend having a straight 2in (For non-turbo) pipe wealded to the catalytic converter.
In the stock rear muffler position, put a dynoma/borla muffler. This should free up a lot of
backpressure. However, with a non-turbo car you do want some backpressure, so that you don't
lean out the fuel mixture, and kill your low end.

Allen, Working on a car during Spring Break often denotes a financially challenged person. Suspension upgrades are always a welcome addition to any car that can handle it; with no reason other than to make the car handle better. Especially for weekend campaigns and road trips.
For exhaust, probably best to make mods after the origional needs attention. Check into IPD and all the others mentioned here for ideas. Don't be afraid to ask questions of our knowlegable band of...

In this case, it denotes a student, which means that I'm inherently "financialy-challenged," at least in respect to an adult in the real world, with a full-time, full-paying job. However, spring break is the only time when I won't be needing the car for a while, so I can take it in and have the suspension work done. It's not a matter of money - why do I feel like I'm justifying myself?

Okay, I was the owner of a nonturbo 760 GLE with a B28, with four different exhausts I made from my own homebrew. A six will always be deeper than a four and non of the following were super loud except for the time I built a straight pipr, but then I had no backpressure and that sucked cause there was no torque. Well, go to a muffler shop after hours and ask them to bend you something up. Then buy a Flowmaster or a glasspack, or even a cheesy turbo muffler at an autp parts store and connect the sucker. I liked my loud and popping when I let off the gas but the neighbors hated it and shared their feelings with me. Also, kill the front resonater and just leave the rear muffler. That you can do with pipe and clamps in you driveway and it might cost $10.00, yes hack out the front resonater.
I am an exhaust freak so if you have any questions, ask me, I build a new custom msystem every three months....
