122/140 Seat swap[ALL/1988] posted by Brian T. on

How easily will 140 or 160 series seats fit into a '67 122? I've noticed they have a similar "U"-shaped bar underneath but I'm wondering how easily they'll go in. ---Brian

I've seen it done....

Except for leather or fabric upholstry, 142/144/164 seats are essentially identical but a couple of problems exist if attempting amount in the 122:

1. 142/144/164 seats are wider than 122's - make measurements.
2. Mounting hardware versus floorpan configuration is not exactly the same.

Try this - use original 122 seat floor connection hardware. Remove 142/164 lower frame that mounts to the floor and then use a thin aluminum plate as a converter template to match up bolts versus mounting holes between the 122 & 140/160 items. Bolt 122 lower frame to plate and then 140/160 seat on top of the plate too. Years ago when Recaro didn't make a mounting kit for Volvo, this was how it had to be done!

Good Luck!

Followup to previous - just thought of a few other points. The use of an adapter plate will also allow you to adjust the position of the seat sidways to make the wider seat fit better. Your rear seat could be re-upholstered to match the front seats, there's no way a 142/164 rear seat would fit a 122. Considering the age and typical condition of the 142/164 seats, you'll probably be re-upholstering them too anyway!

Thanks for the tips. I already put some 240 seats in my '65 a few years ago. It only took about 3 hours to make some brackets and mount them on the original 122 bases. The problem I'm having converting my wife's car is that it's a 2-door, and nice 242 seats are hard to find. I was hoping the 142 seats would just bolt in but it sounds like it's just about as much work. ---Brian
