brake caliper rebuild or replace/240[ALL/1988] posted by Craig on

I was reading all of the posts to Mr. Tool's "sticking rear caliper" post, and it made me wonder if I am nuts to be considering a rebuild of my 82 240's front calipers! One of the left front pistons is so frozen that it took quite a bit of pedal pressure to move it. I noticed that all of the dust seals are rotted off, though the rest of the pistons move fine. I bought a $25.00 rebuild kit from I.P.D., but am now wondering if spending the money on a new caliper would be a better idea. I am not into hours of frustration, especially if it could lead me to scrapping the job and having a car that is stuck on the jack stands while I wait for the calipers to get here! All I have is brake pressure- no air compressor to force pistons out. Is this job worth the hassle? and can someone give me an idea of a time frame for rebuilding both front calipers? Also wouldn't you have to complete one side, then bleed the system and do the other (because you have lost fluid once you push pistons out on the first caliper)? Just stuck on the $$ vs headache debate. thank's, -Craig

Craig,
Last year I replaced all my calipers on my 83 240 Turbo, I payed $60 ea. plus core.
The problem I encountered was that every one of the front brake line nuts would strip. Never had a problem like this in 20 years of working on my cars.
The calipers were the originals and so were the brake lines.
I had to go to my Volvo junk yard & get all the lines from the splitter to the front wheels & new flex lines.
Rear nut lines were fine, but replaced them anyway!
Save some time get the rebuilds. Just my $.02.
Good Luck!

I got some replacement brake calipers at the Trak Auto warehouse in Torrance.
Costs about $33/each.
I don't know if they were mispriced or the normal price.
I think they were ATE. They were for a rear 80 DL wagon.
For information in LA (310)555-1212.

Trak Auto might now be called Kragen Auto.

Craig, you ask a lot of questions that you seem to have answered yourself. Buy the caliper and you'll have time to watch half-pipe skate thrash on Saturday afternoon. Careful with that axe Eugene...

I decided to take all the advice (as well as my own concerns) and buy the calipers. I actually bought used ones (used very little)- looked as if they came off an Arizona car because the metal is still grey and all the rubber, bleeders and threads are fresh. I paid $50.00 for both fronts and even got 90 days on them. If they give me 5 years of use, that is what I'm looking for and I'll practice a rebuild of my old ones on my own time with the kit I already have. Now I will go catch the rest of thrasher skate fest on ESPN.
