Wet floor rear seat[ALL/1988] posted by Jim Creighton on

Can anyone advise a new Volvo owner on the possible source for water getting in to my '86 740 sedan?
I pulled up the carpeting and the foam when I first noticed it but when I couldn't find any where it might
be leaking in from on the bottom of the car I figured one of my kids had spilled a bottle of water. Now, a
rainstorm or two later, the carpet is soaked again. It collects in the foot space behind the driver's seat.
Where it comes from I don't know. Any ideas?
Thanks Jim C.

This past weekend I finally found the cause of my wet carpet on my 765, although mine was showing up in the rear passenger foot well area. The leak was actually coming from the front passenger side. Pull the carpet off the front as well. If you find that it's soaked, then that's where you should start looking.

What I did was remove all the foam and exposed as much of the floor metal as possible. I then took a hose, layed it on top of the car and had it spray water all over the roof and onto the windshield. Get in the car with a flashlight and start looking. My leak came from a plastic cover near the front passenger footwell area. I assume the driver side has this cover. Good luck!

Jim, two areas to check...First, check the a/c drain inside and outside the car. Inside the car it is located in the passenger footwell area at the front. Just move the carpet and foam and you will see where the drain hose exits the car into the engine compartment. Make sure the hose is not blocked and that water can drain easily. I had water blowing back in because the drain tube was cut by someone and it was very short. Also, make sure the drain hose has not been accidentally been disconnected from the inside. Second, check the plastic cover on the right side of the footwell area, which is under the trim and such. You can remove it with some force and put a bead of silicone around it to seal it. Either situation will cause water to enter and run from front to back...I hope it helps...Good luck,

Jim,

I have an '87 740 wagon, and know of a few possible sources of water getting into the rear passenger area. First there are a number of rubber plugs in the exterior floor pan that provide access to the front seats hold down nuts. If these plugs are missing, water can of course splash up and collect. Another new source I found (after replacing the headliner) was the sunroof. The sunroof sits in a kind of tray that has 4 drain tubes (one in each corner) These tubes are supposed to lead down and drain out of openings that are placed in the welds between the fender side, and fender bottom sheet metel. If you look under the drivers door fender you should see a little rectangular opening along the weld or seam. If these are plugged, or the tubes have erroded, then you would have water coming down the door pillars (windshield pillars, and door pillar between front and read doors). One last suggestion, and one that I never see mentioned is to ensure that all drain points under the body are clear and allow water to exit properly. You will find a lot of drain points once you look for them.

Good luck...

I got the head liner material from a national company called Keyston. They are located in several states (I live in Los Angeles, where there is a Burbank store). The are in Seattle, Salt Lake, Denver, Toldedo, and so on. In Burbank, the number is 818 841 6015. The liner material was a little thick for the sunroof area, but perfect for the head liner. They carry a good selection, and I was able to match the color of the tan vinyl supports, rather than the old headliner color.

I also think it is from the front. I have had the plastic plug in the right and left outside kick panels. But also from the AC air intake inside the grill in front of the windshield. A seal ring was out of place and water would get inside but not into the AC system where it would drain out as condensate.
