850 Exhaust Systems/ upgrades in general[ALL/1988] posted by Crispin Glymph on

Does anybody have any experience with the Borla Exhaust systems? I have a '97 850 R and I get to do an upgrade for my car due to Tax return money. I am aware of the Stainless Steel System offered by IPD, but $795 is too rich (And it is painted - what grade of SS are they using that requires painting?). The Borla system runs for about $530 (and it is 304 SS). It too, is cat back bolt on system - so they tell me.

I have never done such an upgrade before. Am I going to have a whole lot of trouble? How easy? How hard? What are all my options? Other manufactures?

Since we are on the topic of upgrades, what makes the IPD chip sooo special that the other chip people don't do?

If I can only do one upgrade at a time from my stock system, what should they be: First get this ....... then get this . . . . etc.

Have many people delt with Group 6, Martin Mortorsports and Performance Products? I know several have delt with IPD, but I usually only here people mentioning the other aftermarket people as alternatives.

Thanks for reading such a long thread.

I don't have my 850/70 ipd catalog with me, but $795...wow they used to be $495, I think...wow.

I have a nonturbo 855....ok mellow out....it was 1996 and I wanted a stick...any way I bought the Group 6 exhaust system. Pretty throaty. (Semi loud for some folks) Not stainless (powder coated) but I paid $200 something. Still good no rust. I added an aftermarket silencer tip that mellowed it nicely.

There are a lot of turbo 850ers on this board so follow their advice!!

Paul I think the $495 price was (and still is) for their coated carbon steel system. IPD now offers SS too for $795. I guess I have to wait for my carbon steel IPD unit too wear out....

I added the IPD turbo exhaust system to my 91 240 and love the difference in performance, but it is just a bit louder than I prefer. Can you tell me more about the exhaust tip silencer that you added. Did it detract from your performance, and where did you get it? I'd appreciate any info that you could give me on this subject.

Stan

Does not detract from performance in any way I can detect.

Don't Know if they have a web site.

I bought the thing at my local "Speed" shop. JC Whitney sells 'em too.

They come in a variety of sizes.

They were never $495. What WERE $495 were the Aluminized steel systems, which are now a bit higher. The price ($795) you refer to is for a Stainless Steel system, which has only Recently been offered by IPD!

What makes the IPD ECU soooo special is , first, it is not a *chip* as you often see vendors refer to, but rather, it is your original ECU unit (well, not exactly yours, but a faximile from someone else) which has been sent to TME in Sweden, where they have 'Flashed' the EProm with the revised code, not unlike the way the Proms in PCs are 'flashed' when they are updated. This code is fully compatible with all original functionality, so OBDII diagnostics are not at all effected. All original functionality is maintained, so much so that Dealers are unable to tell the difference, even when hooking it up to a computer for diagnosis. This is extremely importan. In addition, it maintains all it original functionality regarding the way in which it communicates with the Automatic transmission computer. Again, this is vital. Also, the unit is extremley thoroughly tested, first by TME in Sweden, and second, by IPD here. At this point, thousands have been shipped and are in happy use every day, and are completely supported by IPD, who are one of the best companies I have had the pleasure to deal with. Agreed, they are often a few bucks more than some others, but they *are* the best, and in an area like this, it really doesnt make any sense to 'fool around'.

Paul E.,

Do you know how much stress I'll be putting in my car after I upgrade the ECU with the IPD upgrade? I mean, what about the exhaust, the turbo downpipe, ....
of course all other IPD upgrades will enhance performance, but I wonder how my 'stock' parts alone will handle the ECU upgrade. Eventually, I'll save up some $$$$$ to get all the other upgrades, but in the mean time, with the only the ECU upgrade what are my limitations?
I know I should call IPD ask them these questions, but just wanted to hear an honest opinion/suggestion from a satisfied customer rather than from IPD.

thanks for your patience and help.

ciao.

Han, questions like these are best answered by going to the TME web site, and looking at their 'Questions' page....There, it is stated that longevity has not been shown to suffer...However, he makes a big point of not installing the ECU without also installing the enhanced exhaust...He says that otherwise, the cat is likely to overheat. Ipd on the other hand says it IS ok to use it alone, but that performance number will drop, with HP and torque losing about 10-15 units from max capable. In my case, I had the exhaust installed first, and about 6 mos later, the ECU, and its been completely clear sailing ever since.....Also, when you ask about 'stress' to the system, keep in mind that the drive train in the 850 and X70 turbos can easily handle this power. The system is designed to accept the increase in boost....just look at the new models....with nothing but a 'goose' to the code, theyve increased the power from 222 hp and 221 ft lbs in the stock 850 turbos, to 236 hp and 243 ft lbs in the new X70s. There's talk about a new C70 R model puting out 265 hp. So, its obvious that the system is designed to easily handle it. The Turbo Downpipe is NOT a necessary part of the equation, and neither is a K&N, although I've sunk one into my airbox, mainly because it allows me to not have to ever worry about replacing it. Most folks seem to use the ECU in conjunction with the exhaust....To sum up , TME says its required; IPD says its not, but will perform better.....In additon to the TME web site, call IPD for more feedback...Good luck.....I've yet to hear of an unhappy customer for this enhancement!

Here in Europe we have the fastest cars, highways without speedlimits and as You think the best ECU developer. Why dont we Europeans buy it ??? Why are we buying from other manufacturers??

Just a thougt.........

First of all, its absolutely untrue that you Europeans 'dont buy it'! Where did you get *that* notion? Second, if you do NOT like this unit, your message would be far more meaningful if you had listed a few points as to what you find unsatisfactory....I've listed a few of its pros....where are your cons? And, what other manufacturers are you buying from? Lastly, it is not at all an insignificant point that we can buy that unit here from a local distributor; a fact which goes along way toward contributing to the success of the unit when purchased from IPD.....Should there be a problem, the likes of which are very rare, a replacement unit can be here in a day.... Not something to overlook when replacing the brains of your vehicle!

Crispin,

I recently purchased the TME/ipd motronic upgrade & exhaust combo. A few comments:

1. They are expensive. Is it worth it? only time will tell.

2. I agree with Paul Elliot, it is very important that all stock system functions are retained in this upgrade. The only thing diffent with the chip is a stronger push in the back, which you really feel at higher rpm. If there's one place to spend the $$$, the ECU is it.

3. I had the stainless steel exhaust. I say 'had' since I just returned it to ipd. From 1600-2600 rpm a loud harmonic 'booming' noise emminated throughout the cockpit at light thottle. It was very anoying, so much so that my passenger door and speaker grill buzzed. I had the exhaust professionally installed and then re-adjusted twice!! Before my 850T-5 I owned a 911 with the B&B Tri-flow T-304 stainless steel and it had a mirror-like shine. Why the TME had a black-painted finish I can only surmize that the exterior shell wasn't stainless, only the guts. Maybe ipd will tell you. Or check www.tme.se, TME's european web site. TME says that you shouldn't use the chip without the exhaust, but ipd doesn't say this in their catalogs. I haven't had any problems with the stock exhaust/chip and it is stock quiet with no loss of fuel economy.

4. Someone told me once that the sway bar they bought from Group-6 broke, and thats all I've heard about them. I've thought about buying their skid-plate, though-why protect aluminum with aluminum a-la ipd?

5. Since you already have a R, you may not notice the power gains that I have. When you get the chip, let me know how you like it!

sorry about the long thread too,

sean

Dear Crispin:
I tried to install the Borla exhaust in my 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo. My Volvo certified mechanic was unable to make it fit well. I returned it (and got my money back from Borla without problems) and finally got the IPD exhaust. It went in fine and fast, without problems. The sound is nice and not overwhelming.
