1981 262C New ball.....joints[ALL/1988] posted by Paul S. on

Cruising to my closest Volvo dealer (Barrier in Bellvue, WA) at lunch today to buy the ball joints. RPR wanted a tad over $41 ea. IPD was at $44 and Barrier was at $48 (with my VCOA discount - 20%), but I want to do the job this Sat. so mail order was out of the question. All the really low priced units ($20) are not Volvo parts so I passed....is this insane? Who makes 'em?
I studied all my books last night and for the 1979 (?) and later the job looks pretty easy. Unfortunately I loaned my relatively new Bentley 240 manual to a dead beat. (Don't you hate that? People think loaner books are keepers) Anyway Haynes is actually pretty clear, but are not specific on what year (they just say "early models" had the nut in the bottom of the strut tube. (This requires full strut dissassembly to change ball joints.) Both Chilton's are as inaccurate/inconsistant as usual, but it shows it not being a huge job on some later years (79 on, 85 on, 88 on....?)
Comments will attack Fri/Saturday.

I have found the best after market ball joints to be TRW.
No way you will have to dismantle strut for this job. Just 4 knuts at bass of strut 12mm wrench he 3, 19mm wrech at end of lower control arm and they're off. just don't for get there is a left and a right ball joint for this year.
Good luck

I installed TRW Ball Joints and they are fine, really now your driving a 20 year old Volvo. Why would you want to pay Volvo's mark up for ball joints? They buy probly buy them from TRW in the first place plus TRW's are garrranteed for life. Its a pretty easy job.

Yes, I paid more for Volvo parts that are indeed TRW manufactured. But I got some nice Volvo boxes!!! Seriously the local import parts places weren't that sure about what was needed for the 1981 262, (even after I told them it's the same as the 1981 240).....didn't give me a good feeling. But the Volvo (TRW) Balljoints come with all new bolts/nuts, etc....with the famous Nyloc patch on the bolts.
Yeah the job doesn't look too bad on paper....

Paul,
I'm about to replace my ball joints in an '84 240 Wagon. Mine didn't come with the hardware (bolts) and my Bentley manual recommends replacing it. Can you tell what size the stuff is (m7,m8, lengths?) and maybe I can pick it up ahead of time. Thanks!

Sorry can't find my caliper (I looked) but here's what comes in the kit:
3 "deformed" lock nuts - 3 for where the ball joint attaches to the A arm.
1 Flange lock nut (with a collar/crown) for the threaded top of the ball .
4 Screws (3 cm long M6 or 7 with captive washer collar) for attaching to the strut base.
You'll have to look at the car to see the sizes...sorry if I find my calipers I'll shoot another message.

I just did this job myself.
Be sure to use threadlocker on the (4) bolts that hold the ball joint to the base of the strut.
The original(O.E.M.) replacement bolts already have this on them.
You could also probably re-use the original nuts. If the threads are in good shape, just lightly stake the top of the nut where the thread lock is. The Volvo locknuts are like that.
Lastly, if you do use new fasteners, be sure to use hardened steel (grade 5 or grade 8)

Fully done with install! Pretty easy. Yes, the old ball joints were loose and shot. The new units firmed up the front end nicely. And the rolling out of the driveway while turning clunk is gone. However the 30-40 mph clunk over potholes remains. With the front sway bar and the ball joints disconnected, I was able to study the control arm bushings....they looked pretty cracked....well I guess they'll be next.
More exciting are the new IPD sway bars...see separate post.
