1800 Lock Cylinder Replacement[ALL/1988] posted by Chris A. on

I recently purchased a '70 1800. the former owner replaced at least 1 of the doors and/or lost the door keys. I've seen a company advertising replacement lock cylinders for 25 bucks each. I know I could have a locksmith produce a new set of keys for a little less, but due to the door replacement, I would have a seperate key for each door. Has anyone performed a lock cylinder transplant, and are there any nasty secrets I should know about the inner workings of the 1800's latch mechanism?
Thanks as always for your advice, happy motoring etc...

It should be possible to have a good locksmith rework all similar lock cylinders so that they use the same key. You likely would have to remove the cylinders yourself and bring them to the locksmith.

I'm probably not the right person to ask, though, since I carry three keys to operate the various locks on my '63 1800 (sigh). -Glenn.

I only have two keys. Rear window lock on the ES is by far the worst engineering problem on the car. Volvo does have replacement cylinders if you have your original lock number (which can be determined by your VIN). Unfortunately, my original was no longer available. I haven't bothered to take it to a locksmith and have the new one re-keyed. If it costs more than $20.00 per cylinder, you might contact Volvo about getting three new cylinders. I would be interested in your decision.
