This is my first posting, however, I have tuned in to the Brickboard before and think it is a great resource supported by great people. I have a 1992-944-38K and a 1993-945-69K.
The problem-
My brother's 1991 745 has a problem in the cold weather, (below 40 deg f) in that the steering wheel is extremely difficult to turn after the car has been sitting for several hours. It gets easier as it warms up. I fear it is the rack leaking internally and have ckecked the pump belt and fluid. If this is the case, who is a good source for a reman. rack. I replaced a rack on a 1983-245 I had which was pretty straight forward. Is this similar or are there any tricks to the 700 series. I usually use original parts for repairs but this one is quite expensive. Any help would be appreciated.

My '87 740 was also pretty stiff when cold and very noisy. I saw amazing
improvement by flushing out the old muck that had accumulated in the system
over 113,000 miles and putting in fresh fluid (unhook return hose and keep
fresh fluid in the reservoir as you run vehicle with the return hose in a
plastic milk carton). Mine runs much quieter now.
IPD (mail order volvo parts 1-800-444-6473) has rebuilt racks with stainless
steel cylinders on which they offer lifetime warranties that seem to be
somewhat reasonably priced. Good luck.

Sad truth is if flushing doesn't work and it ususally doesn't you're looking at a new rack. Don't buy the cheapy remans from local parts house!

Yepp. I have had the same problem myself. Itīs probably the rack.
