Metal Radiator[ALL/1988] posted by John Acampora on

I had a metal radiator installed in my 87 765T and have had nothing but problems trying to get the temp sensor sealed in the tank (uses a rubber gromet). Just started leaking again today. Someone mentioned a screw fitting to hold the sensor, but I have been unable to find one. I believe my radiator is a Nissen and has threads where the holes is for putting the sensor in. Appreciate any help.

The metal radiator I just installed in my '87 740 came with a new rubber grommet
which fit inside of a screw - on cap that sealed the whole shebang up tight. I'd
check back with whomever sold you the radiator - maybe they left out a part.

I'm about to install a metal radiator on my 90 740 turbo. What are the better radiators (if there indeed are options) and roughly how much should the project cost (assuming i would NOT be doing the work myself). Any advice since you just purchased? Thanks!

I had a independent Volvo tech install mine about two years ago. I have since moved away and he wont tell or doesnt know who makes the part. This leaking problem is a real pain and I suggest you make sure you have a solid, not rubber seal to hold the sensor in. As a last resort I am going to take to a radiator shop and have them solder closed and attach the sensor to the outside of the radiator somehow. I am surprised that Volvo designs and radiator manuf. make such a poorly designed product.
I called IPD and they say you must use clue to seal theirs, just like the others, unbelieveable?

If you have a problem keeping the sensor in the rad. one possible solution would be to use the lower rad hose kit like the older 240's had for their Aux. Fan sensors. I think the hoses are the same size, and as I recall my Metal 3 row rad was delivered with a sensor mount about 3/4 way up the right side facing the engine but install instructions specificly suggested the lower hose mount-the opening had a factory type seal/plug on it-maybe they knew but wouldn't say?
