My volvo is a 850 1993 engine 5254s automatic.The problem with my car started after washing the engine.The car started to shake,like is was working in 4 cylinders.I found one of the spark plug cable had some moisture inside.After cleaning the cable the shake did go.But a few minutes later the car check engine light came on.And started to flow black smoke.I read the DTC codes in the computer and the codes are 1-1-3,2-3-2.I checked the MAF sensor plug and put some electronic cleaning spray.To get better connection.Also I did that with the CO2 sensor.After I reset the computer the car wait like 3 minutes and did the same thing.Today I checked all the plugs sensors and cleaned them.I tested the car for about 30 minutes and the problem was gone.But when I put the car in parking,the car started to hesitate and the rpms began to up and down,and the check engine light did go on.And the black smoke started to flow again.I dont now what else to do with the car.I need help!

Ivan,

is the MAF sensor the same as the cam-timing sensor? Possibly the timing sensor was damaged by the washing and that could easily cause your roughness!

let us know!

I wish I could remember what the 1-1-3 code is for, but I'm pretty sure it isn't a MAF sensor code. You need to dry off all the electrical connectors in the engine compartment. Volvo recommends that you DONT steam clean the engines. Good Luck

I encountered the same problem after washing (actually rinsing with a garden hose following spraying the green Wheel Magic onto a COLD engine) the engine of our 1994 850 non-turbo.

While driving, it felt like one or more cylinders went dead, as though the Volvo gods were throwing a switch.

This condition would come and go. Finally, it stayed, so I replaced the distributor cap, rotor and spark plug wires.

I was especially intrigued by the fact that moisture was apparent inside the spark plug well walls. Moisture -- either from the rather gentle washing, or the atmosphere -- was collecting on them, as well as the other components.

Well, the new parts seem to have done the trick. I did get to be familiar with all sorts of otherwise unrelated parts that had to be removed to gain access to the cap and rotor (like the air filter box and ductwork!).

But, the car has never run stronger. Plus, in a nod toward our mild southern Cal climate, I defeated the warm air mixing door inside the air filter box. But, that's another tale...

These parts are only available from Volvo (and maybe IPD). Good luck.

The volvo gods make magic and the check engine light did not come on,on the last two days.I place the car out in the sun and the moisture is gone.Thanks for all your tips. Your Friend from Puerto Rico Ivan.
