locking mechanism[ALL/1988] posted by Jane on

I have a '94 850 (no turbo) that came with the security alarm and auto-locking
doors. The doors will not automatically lock with either the remote or by using the key in the door. Nor will all of the doors lock by depressing the lock from inside the car. The remote and key will lock the gas tank door.
My boyfriend went down to the Volvo dealer with me and we tried buying a
new relay for the door locks. The relay was a new updated relay that had one
pin less than the original relay. Needles to say, the relay did not correct the problem.
Any ideas as to what is wrong? The fuses are fine. Is there another relay
other than under the steering wheel that we are not aware of?

Sounds like someone came up with the wrong relay!
I would call a two or three other Volvo dealers and see if you come up with the came number. it is also possible the the master switch in the drivers door is defective. This is a tough one to check yourself though! You really need factory wire diagram for this.

Jane,
There are two relays, one for the central locking system, and one for the alarm system. Other than trying new relays, you are looking at two fairly complex systems working together that can be very tough to diagnose a problem without the factory wiring diagram, a volt/ohm meter, and some experince with electrical fault tracing. In other words, you might want to take it to the dealer. Good Luck

Jane,
it could also be the main CPU unit that controls the alarm unit and the function to lock and un-lock the doors. All Volvo's 200 -700-800-900 and on wards
have a vaccum type locking system. It's controlled by the front driver's side door lock. From what you wrote in your letter, it could be a number of things.
First of all without the Volvo factory alarm installed you should be albe to lock and unlock all the doors using the inserted key into the driver's side lock. Now, with the Volvo factory alarm installed and the relay or the alarm or the plunger device installed on the driver's side door to lock and unlock it.
You should still be able to use the key inserted in the driver's side (front)
door lock to open all doors even if there was something wrong with the volvo alarm system. I'm guessing you got a combination of faults.
Best way is to test if there is power going into the device that opens and closes the doors. then you can work out what is at fault.
Hope it's of some help!
