I need a reliable Volvo for $1500-3000![ALL/1988] posted by Ted Y. on

Please help me.
I need advice. I am looking for a good "daily driver" for my wife in the $1500-3000 range. I don't know whether to buy a 242, 244, 245, 740, deisel, gasoline, turbo, or naturally aspirated.
Personally, I have owned a 1966 122S, a 1972 P1800ES, and a 1977 245. I will probably get a lot of backlash from classic volvo enthusiasts on this comment, but I had the most fun with the 245 until I turned the car over to my mom. She has run the car into oblivion, but it is still "rolling".
I also have had minor service experience working in an independent Volvo garage for one year. While there, I took a liking to the dependability and ease of maintenance of the 240 series. The 740 series looks interesting too, but I have never "owned" one. I don't mind getting my hands dirty on a used car, but I don't want to buy someone else's problem.
Are there any of the models I have listed which you have owned? What were the benefits or problems you had with yours? Would you reccomend another model?
Please help with ANY information. My wife needs a car soon!
Thank you.

I've got an 84 265 Diesel only 191K miles on it. Use it for a 55 mile commute everyday. Looks and runs great. I would consider $2500. If you are interested let me know?

I have owned a 245 turbo and a 760 GLE and have done almost all the work on both. I have worked on other Vo's too, and both are simple. I guess it boils down to what style of car you like although 240 series rot out a lot and 7's never seem too. One looks Russian in styling while the other is more modern, you decide but I like the Soviet styling!!!
