i am having a heck of a time keeping the rims clean (especially the fronts) on my '97 855-T5 primarily due to brake dust. even with washing the car every weekend, the rims are already dirty by tuesday morning. i have though of a couple of possible solutions. please let me know what the pros/cons and availability of these ideas:
1) the plastic or metal disks that go between the rims and the rotors to block the dust.
2) low dust pads from ipd (or other source). i asked the service writer at the dealership i take the car about the ipd pads, he said that they would void the warranty and wear the rotors out much faster than the volvo pads.
3) some cleaner/chemical to stop the dust from sticking to the rims.

Hi Todd,
In the UK i use a group of products called Autoglym. Ive doen a quick search and the are marketed in US as well.

I have the six spoke set on my 850 and when needed use a extra product called "wonder Wheels" which dissolves the brake dust not harming the allows (recommended by Wolf the wheels makers). It just washes off then.
To keep the clean i then use the Autoglym "super resin polish" which helps to keep them shiner longer and also to make it easier to wash them down.
I periodically take the wheels off and do the inner side giving the good once over. Autoglym do have a wgheel cleaner as well but never tried it as yet.

I don't really know about "VOIDING THE WARRANTY", (famous scare tactic) but I do know that the IPD (Axxis/Repco) pads are the real answer. They are essentially dust free and they will not wear the rotors perceptively faster than the Volvo pads.
A good wax job on the wheels does help some.
On Voiding the warranty: I do know replacing the pads will not void the entire car warranty!!!! (And I doubt they will void the rotor coverage either!)

Try washing them in hair-shampoo!! Its not a joke. I have used it for 2 years and i think it is just as good(low price) as any "rim cleaner" i have ever found.I spray it on, in a spraybottle.Mixed with hot water in 1:15.
It works very well on my BBS splitwheels which will get dirty very fast with all those small polished edges,and i believe it keeps the dirt off a little longer.Anyway its cheap to try it out.

As Paul noted in his post the only effective way is to minimize dust with the IPD/PBR pads. I did it at 25k miles with my first brake job and wished I had done it sooner. DON"T use the plastic or metal disks as they can interfere with brake cooling and cause warped rotors.
Your service writer is full of BS on a number of counts on the warranty issue. First of all the rotors are not normally covered under the warranty because they are considered a normal wear item. Secondly aftermarket pads would not affect the warranty on any other part of the car as there must be a demonstratable cause and effect relationship between a covered failure and an aftermarket part to void the warranty for that part.
Having said that some dealers have replaced rotors under warranty when they wear out prematurely or warp (My fiance had her '95 854GLT rotors replaced at 25k miles by the dealer without her asking even though she & I both agreed that they probably were suffering from normal wear - she left foot brakes because of a handicap and knows that will wear brakes faster). I warped my rotors, blamed it on my driving syle, had them turned and mounted the PBR pads and didn't have another problem with the stock rotors up to the point I installed the IPD cross drilled Brembo rotors at 45k miles.

just curious, after you switched to the cross drilled brembo rotor, do you have any problems with it? and how many miles do you have it for? i'm thinking of getting them when it comes time to get rid of my factory rotors.

The pads on the front were a VERY tight fit against the rotors. There was a recommended 300 mile break in period where I took it pretty easy on the brakes and at the end of that time everything had seated in and there was no problem. I have about 6k miles on them now with about 10% wear on the pads. Surprisingly the wear on the back pads is slightly higher than the wear on the front. I also had the SS brake lines put on at the same time. I got the package IPD offers for all four rotors (stock size) with SS brake lines.
It is hard to make a comparison on the stock rotors because my driving has changed. I had 45k miles and one brake job on the stock rotors when I replaced them. At one time or another I warped both back and front rotors and the fronts were warped again when I replaced them. I did have a 14 mile commute to work on a narrow hilly backroad thru the woods with a lot of "twisty bits". The best part of my day was going to and coming from work ("work release program"!) where I would always have the opportunity to charge up to at least one corner, brake at 80-90% and throw it into it. Sometimes I would be lucky enough (no traffic) to that way most of the way home. Once every few months I might come across a similar minded person who I could follow or who would follow me seeing if we could keep up (absolutely no place to pass).
Now I have a 45 mile commute (one way) on mostly interstate or high speed secondary roads (sigh). What a waste of IPD ECU unit, Cat back exhaust system, K&N filter, IPD springs, Bilstein struts, strut tower brace, 17" 215x45x17 Toyo's.......But tires and brakes sure don't wear out as fast.

Bad form to follow up on your own post but I forgot to mention...
The IPD/Brembo cross drilled rotors (stock size) come from Steve Millen of Nissan and BMW tuner fame in CA (had his break in instructions. My tuner called out of curiosity and they are available from them at slightly lower cost than from IPD. I don't know if the oversized Brembos come from the same place. My guy also said the rotors were a dead ringer for Brembo's that fit the 5 series BMW but didn't have a set to put sie by side to see where any differences were.

About what your service writer said regarding the IPD pads: Absolute Bunk! At 12,000 miles I replaced my stock pads on my '95 854T with the Repco/PBR/AXXIS Deluxe pads from IPD...I noticed that my rear rotors had warped. My dealer replaced them at No Charge, even with the Repco pads on! Since then, there is virtually no dust. In addition, because they use Asbestos instead of Metal, they are much Easier on the rotors, not Harder as your dealer suggested...As proof, on my newish rear rotors (the ones that were replaced), there is no sign of any where whatsoever...not even faint scoring or glazing. So, I think it all depends on what kind of dealer you have..If I were you, I'd find the next nearest dealer you can and try him out...
