Coolant leak[ALL/1988] posted by Nirmal on

I have a 1980 250 Wagon. I have had a coolant leak for a while which
I have lately seen to come from the cooling pump housing.
I suspect the seal in the pump may be leaking. If that is so do I
need to change the whole pump or can I change the seal only.
Cost wise which is better option. The pump is only a year and a half
old. Is it possible that the leak can be from another part of the pump
eg. the outlest rings..
Any assistance will be appreciated.

could be....yes......no.....yes
You should be able to see if it's leaking from the front seal. Especially if your pump has a weep hole on th underside. If, however, it is the waterpump/head seal...ya gotta pull the pump (and change cam belt if it's near time). Check the seal on the heater pipe on the right side...if that's it, you don't need to pull the pump (but you might consider changing the heater hoses).

You should be able to narrow down the leak by looking for a white powdery coating (what happens when coolant gets cooked) or coolant itself. You can look for leaks around the seal of the pulley (you'd probably hear a squeeking noise
at some point) or along the top of the water pump where the pump meets the
engine block (look for a gap around the gasket here). If its the gasket your
water pump's fine just take it out and put in a new gasket.
Good luck,
Nick
