S70 T5 Rattles[ALL/1988] posted by Jerzy Rozenblit on

Has anyone had this problem resolved successfully by a dealer? More specifically, I have an S70 T5 with 5K miles on it - the suspension is very clunky, it rattles and squeaks a lot. Thanks for any feedback.

jerzy,
i took my 97 850 T5 wagon back to the dealer after 30,000 miles of rattling and squeaking i couldn't take it anymore. well, i don't mind it myself, but when i'm giving someone a ride, i'm so ashamed that a $40k car has to make so ...."irritating." the dealer did fix maybe like one little noise but squeak and rattle symphony started again shortly. what did i do one night? my entire rear interior was taken appart. i took everything apart and stuffed and tapped all hard suface contacts. also the holes where the plugs go, i taped all of them. what you need: double sided or single sided spongy tape(preferably single sided) and foam wrap or something that can be crushed and soft. when you put the tape, don't tape both sides since you don't want to make any taping permanent or rip any of your upholstery. that did it. no more rattles and squeaks from the rear. i just have to do the front part. if i could just get rid of the clicking noise from the sunroof.....
little time consuming but still in my opinion, better than taking several trips to the dealer and waste your time with people who only go by the book and not solve a problem(at least this dealer i go to, i hope i didn't offend any dealer personel).
good luck.

Wow.
My 98 S70 T5 has 14K on it and is quiet as a mouse. The only thing that rattles in my car is the retracted antenna in my Nokia 2160 cell phone.
I have heard a lot of reports of the backs of V70's rattling, however.
I would take the car to the dealer first and see what they say. Before you go, take a ride in the back seat with someone else driving, and find the location of all of the noises.
Typically most little rattles and squeaks can be fixed with foam tape, assuming it's interior stuff. If you have suspension components groaning or rattling, your dealer should be able to help you.
For the record, my dealer (Dyer & Dyer in Atlanta) has been very helpful in resolving nitpicky stuff for me. I would always try that first. Keep in mind, the dealer has access to all of the TSBs, so if it's a common problem, they either already know about it or will soon.
