240 tires; engine power[ALL/1988] posted by Ian Lee on
Sunday, 25 January 1998, at 4:54 a.m.

I run a 91 240 SE and currently use standard 185/70 R 14 tires. Can anyone tell me if there are similar-sized all-weather, whitewall (thin) tires available?
Also, any ideas to improve engine performance?
Thanks

Ian...I don't have a response to your question about availability of tires, but I would like to know what a 240 SE is. Are you in a foreign (not USA) market? What does the SE nomenclature indicate as far as engine/transmission/trim/etc. is concerned?

Do a search in this BrickBoard for a post that mentions a web site that features a tire size calculator(try phrases "new Tire size" or "tire size calculator"), for suggestions on replacement tires that are similar in circumference to yours. If all you want are WHITE-WALL 185/70R-14 tires, I can't imagine they would NOT be available from some reputable tire store. There are so many different tire brands out there, you're bound to find something you like; there's a mail order place called Tire Rack, call them and see if they can help. I don't know the number but you should be able to find them on the web, using Yahoo or Excite search engines. (www.excite.com - www.yahoo.com).

I think it's www.tirerack.com.

For a tire size calculator, try the following:

Copy the SYLK data below; paste in a new text doc; open doc
inside of most any spreadsheet (I know Excel works for sure).

www.tirerack.com is the way I went about finding new tires for my 91 240. You can check out what's available on their web site, but you can't order unless you call their toll free number and speak with a technician. When I called them they asked me about my car and what type of driving I do and under what conditions, then suggested a tire. I'm very pleased with what they suggested, and it was towards the low end of their price range for the size tire I wanted.

For performance, if you want to improve speed and power try the IPD Turbo Exhaust system. I have access to a hoist, so I bolted one on in about 90 minutes. The directions were very good and I'd say that the skill level required is about the same as that required for replacing spark plugs, not too difficult. The difference in performance is significant. I have much better acceleration and my comfortable cruising speed has increased to about 95 MPH (I'm in germany with few speed limits on the autobahn).

I also added the IPD heavy duty sway bars and really don't notice that much difference in handling. Putting the new tires on seemed to improve the handling more than the sway bars.

Hope that this helps, and best of luck.

Stan
