B230FT Fuel Injectors - Overhaul or Replace?[ALL/1988] posted by Bill on

Is it worth replacing the O-rings on my old injectors? I have a 86 B230FT with 160k miles and am experiencing a slightly rough idle (runs great otherwise). The injectors have never been replaced, but I thought I might be able to replace the O-rings to fix any possible leaking which might cause the roughness. Or would it just be more sensible to replace them? I know the cost to send them out to be tested and cleaned is almost the same as the cost of the part.

Thanks,
Bill

At 160000 miles, you know more than me, but I would ensure that all other basic
components are working right (e.g., ignition system, throttle switch, idle
valve, pvc nipple, fire trap, coolant sensor, air filter, fuel filter, etc.)
before shelling out the $240 for new injectors. Search the archives for "rough
idle" for many ideas.

Volvo recommends Chevron Techron to clean the injectors. I'd try that too.
Let me know how it goes.

Seals are cheap but you can quick check for leaks by spraying around the bases of them with carb cleaner or WD-40.

I also doubt that the injectors need replacement. For a good cleanout use a 3M injector cleaning. You have to get the adapter then you run the car for about 7 minutes while it runs on the cleaner only. Be sure to disable the fuel pump so you will not run gasoline all over a hot manifold. When you replace the seals the kit comes with replacement plastic hoods. Take the old ones off and clean the tip of the injector with carb cleaner, Berrimans B12 or such.

I had a rough idle on my '86 740t and the problem was caused my a

leaking/broken intake manifold gasket. It was easy to replace, about an hour,

with simple tools and a new gasket. I could not find the tougue specs though,

to it was tightened to 20 ft-lbs. No problem since
