snow tires for VOLVO 850T[ALL/1988] posted by Alan Tomkins on

What is the recommendation for snow tire for the Volvo 850T? Winter weather where I live (NE) is variable, with snow one day, ice/sleet the next, dry shortly thereafter.

You won't be disappointed with the Gislaved Nordfrost II; this is my 3rd winter with them on my 855glt and they really carve through everything I've driven in all around New England. They also give good wear and reasonable handling in the dry. The only shortcoming IMO is that they are loud, though I don't know if they are louder than other unstudded snows. And remember that they aren't going to corner like the wide, low-profile tires you're used to on the 850T! You can get them bundled at any Volvo dealer, or various other retailers or mail/phone order. There's a good source in Keene NH if you need a recommendation. -Josh

Two words: Bridgestone Blizzak. I've put them on both of my Volvos,
and they are great. They allow my rear wheel drive cars to go up just about
every hill, around any corner, and through 6 to 8 inches of snow. I live in
N.E. Wisconsin, and just about all of my friends that have snow tires have
Blizzaks, including several 850 owners. Call the Tire Rack, you can find the
number in just about every issue of Road & Track. They sell tire and wheel
packages for just about everything. Their 850 package is $475, comes with
all four tires, mounted on steel wheels already balanced, and it comes with
wheel covers. One style of these covers looks like the stock 850 cover, but
without the Volvo emblem. This may sound expensive, but the tires will last
for 4 or 5 winters, and they extend the life of your summer tires, and finally,
they allow you to get real high performance summer tires, not those crappy
all-season jobs that most people get or are given by the factory. A good set
of summer tires will allow you to enjoy your Turbobrick even more in the summer,
with an extra safety margin in the winter. Good luck, and feel free to e-mail
me if you have any questions.

Cheers,

Zack :)

I would have to agree with the posting about the Nordfrost III's. We bought ours as a package from the dealer (no cheaper elsewhere- in fact possibly even more expensive except for the Volvo hub caps which are very expensive, but if you like OEM stuff ...) Although we put them on ourselves (long story why we did this) I believe most dealers will include mounting and removal each year for free. The tires are excellent and highly recommended. We got caught in the first storm of tbe year without them, having the chubby Z-rated Michelins on instead. A bent steering rack from hitting an unforgiving curb resulted. Trust me, you don't want to have to pay for a Volvo 850 steering rack - yikes $$$$$!. The winter tires have given us great service and peace of mind. Well worth the money.
