Flogging the dead 760 horse[ALL/1988] posted by Owen Woodland on

Despite what I have heard and been told about the volvo V6's, I am about to examine a 1984 760 GLE, power steering, aircon, electric sunroof, the works. It's done 240,000 kms (which I have never considered to be much for a volvo), and is going for $5000 australian (what's that about $3500 US). It was originally advertised (from a car dealer) for $7000 au, about a month ago. There is, however a glut of cheap(ish) 760s on the market here, and volvo's aren't really popular (which makes them cheap to buy if not repair!!). If it's okay looking, and I will get it inspected by an independent company, I will probably buy it, but I am interested to hear first about what bad things to look for in the car (yes, I know it's been discussed before, but I want new input). Especially in regard to "that awful French V6". I doubt that it's ever been rebuilt.
Thanks in advance,
Owen in Australia (about to be a lot faster)
PS Automatic trans (probably 3 speed, I didn't ask, and I'm not familiar with 7-series volvos)

Owen,
I think I saw that advertised also. They are cheap. Cheap enough to flog, and repower with a B23E when the V-6 craps out. Refer postings re. oil galleries to cam. Look at cam wear, breathers, comp. test, leaks. Take it for a long drive, as they steam clean the hell out of the engine. If you buy it, try Mobil 1 or diesel lube oil to clean things out. Both might make it leak more also. Let me know how it goes at khyndes@bridge.com.

The volvo 4 cylender is a wonderfully dependable economic engine.
Please reconsider. As a 20 year volvo technician I have to say that the b 27/28
engine is a car for a mechanics who likes to work on his (or her) car.....a lot.
Parts can be very expensive.
Good luck.

Now you know why you don't see any Deloreans on the road...the posers that bought 'em don't know how to work on the PRV V-6 and/or can't afford to repair the suckers.

followed it by the trail of coke it left behind!
Seriously, I saw a Delorean Sunday evening, here in Whitestone, NY and I'm sure he was in neighborhood to get service at Jon Carlo's Shop. The place is always full of Fiat X1-9's, Alfas,Jags, Rovers, etc...
And since I could see beneath it, I could tell the driver wasn't using Fred Flintstone motor!
