I just got a great deal on a 79 242 but the overdrive doesn't engage. The OD light on the dash goes on but she doesn't shift into od. Any suggetions on where I should start?

First check the OD solinoid under car at rear of trans. one wire goes to grond. some times they come undone. Check with test light for power at solinoid. Make sure trans is full. No oil no OD!!! Take two asprin and call me in the morning

Check Relay and/or Frayed wires[ALL/1988] posted by Mr. Tool on

you may have a bad overdrive relay or the wires coming out the bottom of the
selector shaft may be shorting. Check out earlier posting on this same issue within the last month. ........... mr. tool .......

be sure transmission filter is clean....I've got an 83 240 w/218k 4 speed w/OD and have had trouble with engaging OD when filter is dirty..it is on bottom of transmission under a plate....

Worked for mine...
