'83 Turbo 245 Drivetrain "howl"[ALL/1988] posted by Bob Mohr on

My brother in law's family just "inherited" an 83 245 Station Wagon with mileage they estimate as greater than 150K (broke odo) and the M46 4+OD transmission. The car drives well with little or no vibration at the steering wheel.

However, there's a significant whine or howl from the transmission tunnel as the car accelerates through the first four gears. Sounds like an old Ford dumptruck. The OD initiates upon demand and the noise appears to be greatly diminished once in 5th gear.

A tranny or a differential problem? The tortured soul of its former owner? Thanks in advance for any help.

Most likely your howl if it goes away in od is the O/D out put bearing. The OD can Come out with out removing the trans. however this is not a job for the faint of hart. The bearings (2) are available from Volvo at a premium. you can take the numbers off the bearing and call a local bearing shop from phone book and do much better.

Bob, in my humble opinion, the "howling" sound from your brother-inlaw's drivetrain is most likely the center support bearing for the driveshaft. Just under the center console, the drive shaft sections are joined together there and is supported by a bracket under a rubber bushing with a sealed bearing inside that is pressed onto the shaft. My suggestion is to take the car to a shop where it can be raised on a lift, stand under it, while someone else inside the car could run it through the gears (try not to go over 30-40 mph). You should be able to pinpoint the source of the sound at this point (be careful of moving parts!!!)
However, it could also be the differential or overdrive, but I doubt it.

Okay lets think about this............
The input brg in trans goes engine speed and gets side loading in 1,2,3,& R. Wouldn't be that one 'cause the noise would drop in 4th and remain relatively the same per eng rev in 5th.
Output brg in trans would be noisier in 1st and diminsh as you shift up as load is greatest in low gears and lessens as you shift up, so it's not that one.
Countershaft bearings would follow pretty much the same pattern as input brg. Not those either.
Driveshaft center support bearing will see no change in load with gears but will get faster proportional with road speed. I don't vote on that one either. Center support bearings can sometimes vary in noise on accel or decel as pinion angle changes and can affect the load on bearing but still proportional to road speed.
Output brgs in OD will get faster directly proportional with road speed but the load on them goes down as you engage OD due to the cone clutch return springs that are pushing against the output bearings being pulled away from the output bearings as the cone clutch is pulled against the brake surface. This one gets my vote (Art's opinion validated). There is a remote chance that filter is partially blocked on OD pump and it is whining when OD is off as fluid volume being pumped is greater when no pressure is being produced. I said remote.
Words of wisdom.... Don't play Volvo gearbox Trivial Pursuit with players that might be holding a Volvo transmission repair manual, they'll look at the manual and cheat every time.
