1989 782 Bertone...? Huh...? What's this all about?[ALL/1988] posted by Jim Ells on

Am going to traverse the Narrows Bridge tomorrow morning on my way to check out a 1989 '782C' Bertone Coupe. Well..., this is what I'm told it is. Will one of you really knowledgable folks (Abe, Steve, Ed L, Paul S, Milo, etc.) please verify this name & number for me? Never heard of a Bertone past '82. 'Course, my information process mechinisim is limited being Norwegian- you know. Mom always said it was defective DNA patterns - Dad always contered with "artistic" temperment...
The owner wants $10,500_. I'll take a couple of fotoz for what ever-just in case it's interesting. Thanks in advance.

There was a 780 Coupe made by Bertone for Volvo. This was based on the 700 series. It was a different animal than the earlier Bertone which was based on the 200 series.

The 780 is a Bertone (say bert 1) product as well as the earlier 262-based 262C Bertone. It even has little BERTONE badges on it. Nice car if you are handy at repairing trim problems. The door panels separate but can be relatively easily repaired with trim screws and carcinogenic/harmful to the ozone adhesives (not the usual pulverized moose horn stuff that Volvo uses). 1989 has the independent rear suspension ans can be either a B280 V6 0r a turbo 4 cyl.

Jim,
You'll be looking at a 780 Coupe, which was based on the 760 chassis and engine line and was available in the U.S. from 1987 to 1991. It differs from its 262C predecessor in that the 780 received a distinctively unique interior and coachwork from Bertone. Since it's a 1989, the engine in the car you're looking at might be either the 4-cyl Turbo (with TurboPlus kit standard, if memory serves), or the famous (or infamous) PRV V-6, albeit a few iterations better than the V-6 in the 262C. From '88 and on the 780 received all of the mechanical upgrades of the 760, including the Multilink-IRS, new climate control, etc.
They're great cars. Parts for the body, trim, and interior get a little expensive, but hey, that's limited volume I guess.
Good luck!
Regards,
Eric

Thanks - Abe, Mike, Eric - probably going to pass on the look-see. I was anticipating a cool, low profile machine similar to my '79m 262C. Am I correct in assuming that this model is no more than a stock 700 series body configuration with some finishing done by Bertone? Can't find a picture anywhere in my Volvo stuff. Regards, jim

No, it's actuallya cool two door ride with no shared parts with a 740/760 other than suspension and powertrai. It has a killer sound system.

Hi Jim,
As in the previous response, the 780 has a lower profile, two-door body and interior which is unique to this model. I believe the cars were all assembled in Italy by Bertone. Outside of the engine, chassis and related mechanics, the 780 is definitely a different car.
There are some pics at:

There's also a pic of a 780 in racing form at:

Borton Volvo in Minneapolis has a 780 coupe for sale and
pictured on their web site www.borton.com/volvo.html-ssi
the picture is from the rear of the vehicle but it looks different
than the 700's more so than the 262's did.

If you like what Bertone did to the 260, you'll love what they did to the 760 when they made the 780 Coupe. It is without a doubt an elegant looking car for its day, especially the interior.
Looking at an '89 sales brochure, the 780 Coupe (B28F V-6) or Turbo-Coupe (B230FT) had all the goodies found on the 760 plus the 200 watt stereo, beautifully matched burl dash and door inlays, soft glove leather upholstery, a tinted glass power "moonroof" (with pull-out sunshade) and memory-glide power front seats (a big plus for 2-door access). As opposed to the dramatic chop to the 260 roofline, the 780 is only 1cm lower than the 760. As a 2-door coupe it has a more streamlined look than either the 262 or 760. Front headroom/legroom is 3.9cm/2cm less than the 760.
Signore Bertone is quoted as saying, "My long experience in the design and manufacturing of high-quality cars permits me to say that the Volvo 780 is the best product we've ever made." Now would Nuccio Bertone's kid ever lie to you?
The biggest drawback I can see other than parts costs is the towing capacity is 1000lbs less than the 760. However, I somehow doubt there are a lot of trailer hitches on Bertone's.

Jim,
To add just a little more to what has already been said, the six cylinder that was used in the 780 was a B280 (much better than the B28). Used parts will be next to impossible to find and new parts will be very expensive. It is a very nice looking car. If I remember correctly, this car sold for about $40,000 in 1989.

Thanks to all of you who responded. The information is much appreciated. I checked out the car yesterday. The owner has taken, perhaps, the greatest care of anyone I'd ever encountered through the years. It's imaculate. Always garaged. Never wrecked. Oil every 3K miles and a perfect service record. could hardly tell it from showroom new. 126K miles-mostly freeway to and from work. Everything works and has all the bells and whistles. Factory sound w/aux amp plus CD changer in trunk. He's asking "around $10K. Paid $38K in '89. I imagine it's worth it.
Possibly, he would come down a bit as he's over loaded with cars and can obviously afford to negotiate price. Nice guy, from England. COO at Mackie in Woodenville; a manufacturer of audio re-inforcement mixers, speakers, etc. If anyone's interested, I'll supply name, numbers & location.
Thanks again, all of you, for the replies and information. Nice to have Stoneman back AND... really glad Robert is up and at it!
