The electricity gremlin in my dashboard[ALL/1988] posted by R. Abel on

My '87 740, when cold in the a.m., turns off electricity to dash lights, tach,
speedometer, etc., when the headlights are turned on. Once warmed up, the problem
goes away. I suspect possible corrosion/oxidization of a connector somewhere
(or deteriorated insulation causing a ground?) but have not had success locating
and repairing (yet). Ideas? (has new battery and
and cable ends and clean alternator connections). Thanks.

The primary ground to the inst cluster is in the plug to the speedo. It may have been loosened in a service light reset attempt. The other cause may apply to your car. There are two suppliers of clusters on that model, Yzaki and VDO. One of these uses a connection on the back of the cluster under a white plastic pop off cover that is a metal clip snapped over a place where two pices of the printed circuit film join. If there is a poor connection there it causes this "morning sickness" gauge problem.

I have exactly the same problem with my 87 760. The temperature at which this happens is gradually getting higher, it is now about the freezing point. When the interior warms up, everything springs back to life.
Hope someone knows the answer!

My wife's 87 760 has this exact problem. Our family also has an '85 and '86 760 that don't have this electrical mystery quirk. The '87 has always been in the South and in my judgement, the overall condition of the wiring is at least as good as the other 760s.
Please let me know when you solve this mystery.

Able, Brian and David,
Abe's advise will almost certainly exercise those demons. I seem to recall placing a star washer under a ground wire connection at the back of the instrument cluster also. Just pull the cluster and tighten everything you see.

Thanks, guys. It must've been a connection to the instrument cluster. I
tightened/removed/reattached several leads and the problem is gone. While at it,
I also cleaned several of the ground connections in the engine compartment
including the main ground off of the battery. Much improved. Starter is
quicker and other electronics on the dash panel respond quicker when the
key is turned on. Thanks again.

One item I've found (the hard way), was the ground connection cluster at the passenger side kick panel. I had a bum heater fan connection there among other things I tightened and greased ALL connections.
