1987 240DL coil questions?[ALL/1988] posted by Benjamin Groover on

I recently purchase a non-running 1987 volvo 240DL, 107,000 miles,
automatic, 4 new tires and just alligned for $500 bucks.(this I thought
was a very good price :) ) The car is in good condition and
other than a slightly bent(cosmetic damage only) front fender
appears to have been well cared for. After some inital diagnosis
I found that the reason for the non-starting appears to be related
to the gray wire that goes to the coil(this realy is two wires, one
inside the other) I split the wire into two sperate ones and found
that the wire with resistance will run the car while the wire
without will not let it start or fire(both wires are connected to
the - side of the coil). The no-start condition is due to the field
not being broken to the coil and thus not firing the plugs(I believe)
Anyone with any ideas on this would be appreciated.
I have ordered a set of service manuals but they
aren't here yet.
thank for your help,
ben

You might want to have the car scoped, considering you haven't got that much invested in it! For that price, you are definately in a win-win situation!

Good deal on the Brick! I bought a '84 240 DL last year not running but otherwise in good condition for $300. It had 100,000 miles on it and only needed a new engine (broken connecting rod). Good luck.
