My 76 264 is having a curious cooling problem.

After sitting for a month, the fan-alternator belt broke when I started driving it agian(it was really cold out--ice storms here in Portland, OR)

I replaced the belt, and all was well for 15 minutes.

Then the car began to overheat. I pulled over and added alot of water.

Everything was fine.

Next morning, I discovered a loose clamp on a cooling hose--near the thermastat and the pump.

Fixed it, topped off the system w/ anti freeze and water.

Still overheating. The hose connecting the engine w/ the top of the radiator is hot to the touch, while the connecion between the bottom and the pump is cool. The temp gauge climbs to right below the red zone, then stops.

Ideas?

thanks

The fact that your belt broke is interesting (seizing water pump?). The fact the car is not cooling properly may point to a bad water pump.

But then again maybe just a stuck closed thermostat.

You have a B27F, correct? Doesn't it have dual belts?

Might be a bad thermostat. Drain a few quarts of coolant and remove the thermostat. Replace the housing and the coolant and see if your engine still overheats. If not, buy and install a new thermostat.

If you still have overheating, it could be your radiator is due for an overhaul. -Glenn.
