Am I crazy to tow with a 114 HP Volvo?[ALL/1988] posted by Robert Abel on

The 740 owner's manual states towing capacity at 3300 pounds. We own a tent trailer
which weighs in at 1500 lbs. How bad an idea is it to consider pulling
the trailer on vacation road trips? (I know all about cooling precautions,
non-use of overdrive, etc.). What about wear and tear on the drivetrain??
Any responses appreciated.

Go ahead! Volvo has TORQUE, which is more important that HP. I've towed my race car trailer with '79 240GT some 30 000+ miles. You CAN use OD all the time, too. Just shift with clutch and match the RPM. Once connected, no wear! Mine lasted 270 000 miles...Now I tow with 765 turbo and automatic. I use OD and no problems! I don't know why Volvo's OD warning !?

I tow a 20' boat with my 79 242gt (b230ft "upgrade") and have no problems. I do not reommend using the overdrive unless there are NO hills or big bridges to navigate.
You did not mention if you "brick" was turbo or non, stick or auto. Turbo motors were equipped with engine oil coolers (easy conversion with salvage yard parts, if not equipped). If your's is an auto, a trans fluid cooler is a must.
Otherwise, you should have no problems; assuming the hitch is a good one. The weight of what you have said to be towing is equivalent to about 2/3rds of VW bug (easy stuff).
Good luck. Drive safely.
